During this time Benito was inspired by the writings of Hegel, Nietzsche and Karl Marx. Mussolini got the highest mark in examinations of history, literature and singing and it would be typical of him to take the opportunity to make a socialist speech. Mussolini served in the Italian military in 1905 and 1906, then taught school again and became a local socialist leader.
