Queen Gertrude, widow of the late King Hamlet, and now the current spouse of Claudius seems unaware of the events that have taken place but because she has married her brother-in-law, it sets the audience up for more mystery and suspense; the reason, why would she marry her husband’s brother so soon after his death. Could she be apart of the sinister plot at hand? Although the audience finds out that this statement is false, her actions still be rise to some type of mysterious plot. Last but not least, Claudius sets up action when he the audience finds out he becomes King instead of Old Hamlet’s heir. In addition, his ways of trying to get everyone’s mind of the late King’s death show that his character is one that should not be trusted. As always for a tragedy to work, in Shakespeare’s case, there has to be some element of supernaturalism. The appearance of the Ghost stirs a mysterious mood that goes throughout the entire play.
