His father bought him a position at a French military academy where he started training. Napoleon began to excel in the areas of mathematics and mostly history. He had a hard time fitting in with his classmates because of his Corsican roots and his Italian accent. It was said he was unpopular there because of his foul mouth and excessive talking. After graduation he went on to spend another year at the Military Academy of Paris. In 1785 Napoleon was given his commission as a second lieutenant in the army. Napoleon had welcomed the start of the French Revolution in the year 1789, and in 1793 he took over the command of a artillery brigade at the siege of Toulon, there Royalist leaders had welcomed a British fleet and enemy troops. After the British were defeated and pushed out, Napoleon was rewarded with advancement to the rank of general, and assigned to the French army in Italy in early 1794. Napoleon took an extreme amount of pride in his military and was victorious in Italy due to his fiery speeches ( Doc.1) and his great leadership. After several successions Napoleon felt that it was necessary to take dominance over the entire European continent in order for France to have any sort of security. He did not make decisions based on any kind of moral laws, he simply used his intuition. He was a egocentric man and did not see fit to make his people a priority. He was well aware that his people had ideas of a free and constitutional government yet he did not he still re-instituted a monarchy. His egotistical attitude is shown when, he decided to crown himself the Emperor of France ( Doc. 3). As he became more and more successful by gaining victory in several battles he gained a lot of self-glorification. Such glorification that he made the people belief he was the chosen one sent by God to protect them. Those who thought wrong were eternally damned ( Doc.6). Napoleon was continually contradicted himself. For example, Napoleon claimed to be the supporter of equality, liberty, and nationality; however at the same time Napoleon censored the press, executed innocent people, and unfairly rewarded his relatives the positions of high power. One thing for sure thought that Napoleon was a great and powerful leader. He was looked up and some portrayed him as not fearful and magnifying man ( Doc. 2).
