In Act1, ph.33 Willy says “A man who makes an appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest is the man who gets ahead.” On the same page he compares his sons to the neighbor kid Bernard, “Bernard can get the3 best marks in school, but when he gets out in the business world, you are going to be five times ahead of him.” Willy inflates his sons’ sense of themselves so they are too proud to start at the bottom of a business organization. In Act2 ph131, Biff says to his dad, “I never got anywhere because you blew me so full of hot air that I could never stand to take orders from anybody!” Willy relied on his good looks and his reputation to make his sales when he was younger, but as he gets older he cannot charm his clients anymore and he loses them especially when the people he knew retired and new buyers replaced them.
