The Decline Of Rome
...st persecutions of the Christians occurred. Many of the Romans already committed to the faith of Christianity and they refused to abandon it. Constantine legalized Christianity too late and the Empire already too deep in disunity could not recover. The decision to outlaw Christianity caused the once united empire to crumble. Many political mishaps led to the fall of Rome. One of the main problems was the size of the empire. The Roman government system, designed to control a city-state not a giant empire, could not keep area under its control. Due to the poor harmony of the empire, two capitals were created which only added to the economic problems. The legions of soldiers often lost trust of emperors and were under the control of the general. Often a power hungry general would use the legion under his control to attempt to overthrow the emperor. An empire which couldn’t control its own army bound to end in disorder. The emperors of the late Empire definitely did not qualify to control such a vast region. The people of Rome obviously not pleased with the job that the emperors were doing lost control of the empire. However emperors like Diocletine and Constantine tried to prolong the life of the Empire, but could not stop its decline in the long run. Rome once ruled by its own people changed and power hungry tyrants took over. The most significant factor leading to the fall of Rome was the decline in the economy. The government had many debts to pay. Rome needed to find ways to fund public construction, maintenance of the roads and to maintain the army. To fund these projects they would heavily taxed their citizens which they felt were excessive and unjust. By conquering other city-states Rome received money and land but when there were no longer any other places to conquer this revenue source disappeared. Rome never established an efficient system to make money and soon it became worthless. Without national wealth many roads remained un-repaired and the empire once known for its public marvels began to erode. Their vast trade stopped because of the danger...
