...enoir had done that was so interesting, was the invention of compact internal combustion engine. An internal compustion engine is an engine that burns fuel inside the cylinders. By 1990, cars were becoming more popular, and the french roadsters were the most popular cars in Europe. Pre-World war 1 brought out the craftsmanship of good technology in the autombile. Hispano- Suizas, Benzes, Delauney-Belvilles, and Rolls-Royce were all built with great care and detail. The Rolls-Royce came with a 6 cylinder, 7 litre engine, making the car able to drive at 50 mph. After years of cars being only for the rich, Henery Ford created the model T Ford in 1908- an affordable car for the working man. Since then, great progress has been made to the car. It is rare for a family NOT to have a vechile, or in many cases multiple vechiles. They now come in all shapes, sizes and colours, all accustomed to your needs. It is rare that a car owner understands the inner workings of a car nowadays. There is an entire profession based around others laziness to understand how cars run. that being said, cars are intricate. A small car has around 30, 000 individual mechanical components. All of those parts go together to make up the basic systems- fue, exhaust, suspension, brakes and steering, just to name a few. Although all parts of a car are important, the engine is driving the force of the car. There are multiple types of engines in mordern cars, but the “majority of...car engines have four pistons and cylinders set in line.” (Sutton,1990, p.43) Inside the cylinders, gasoline and air is squeezed by the piston to make it ready to catch fire. It is ignited, and expands violently, driving the piston back down the cylinder. This spins the crankshaft and gives the engine power. Along with the pistons cylinders and crankshaft, the engine is home to valves that let fuel into the cylinders, the engine block and cylinder head holding everything into place. Another one of the most important parts of a car is the spark plug. This is what “...ignites the fuel charge to send the piston shooting down the cylinder.”(Sutton, 1990, p.50) Another important part is the distributor. The distributor takes a current sent by the spark plug to the right cylinder. There are many other elements to a car including light and electrical aspects but none of these matter if the smallest part of the...
