Winston believes her to be dead due to her “deathly white” face. However when he kisses her he finds that he is kissing “a live warm face”. His misconception occurring because, “Both of their faces were thickly coated in plaster.” Although Orwell doesn’t use the word ‘dust’ here to imply Party control, plaster and dust are extremely similar, powdery substances and I believe Orwell’s intended meaning is the same in regard to the use of both words. Julia gives some indication of how Winston’s secret rebellion isn’t at all as secret as he would have hoped. “It was something in your face… I’m good at spotting people who don’t belong. As soon as I saw you I knew you were against them.” If Julia can detect Winston’s unorthodoxy by simply looking at him, then it is natural to consider the possibility (almost certainty) of the thought police, whom have the ability to monitor him at any time they wish, also having detected his anarchic tendency. Winston and Julia’s belief that they are safe in their rented room is ingeniously shown to be untrue. “…thanks to the absence of a telescreen.
