Macbeth
...beth also is a very superstitious character and accepts without question the promises of the apparitions. He believes that everything they say is true and even when circumstances were difficult, his superstition made him cling to these promises until events proved how misleading they were. His decision to take the prophesies literally caused him to believe that he was indispensable and that he could not be harmed. In the end Macbeth felt that life was meaningless, his wife was dead, and he had no way out other than fighting or killing. Things were so bad that he did not care about letting Macduff have the victory of killing him, and he fought to his death rather than killing himself. Lady Macbeth is another character who suffers greatly from decisions she has made. When Macbeth was reluctant to murder, she accused him of lacking manhood and of not loving her. She uses her strong will to override all of his objections and this strength made her return to the chamber of death to place the daggers beside the sleeping grooms. When Macbeth feels guilty about the murder she said, “A little water clears us of this deed”. As the play goes on, we see Lady Macbeth weakening, her fainting spell may have been her first evidence of weakness, caused by her realization that Macbeth had gotten beyond her control and had committed them to a continuing career of guilt and crime.
