...to be doing good deeds in the Lord’s name, and how when an idea gets into the minds of the majority of the people there is no stopping its spread among everybody. When such thing occurs intellect and kindness seem powerless and even the truth seems to blur within the lies. The Crucible has as its central character a man named John Proctor who is the embodiment of a good, intelligent person who speaks up for his rational feelings and tries to save some of the accused in the trails who include his wife Elizabeth. Proctor is the opposing force of the unmanageable behavior of hysteria being shown by the people in town. It is very sad in the end because this man, one of the few who is actually thinking straight, is eventually consumed by society’s malice and ugliness not in the sense that he gives in to it, but in the sense that he is victimized. In one of the most haunting scenes in the play Proctor is forced to choose between confessing that he is indeed a witch, therefore saving his life or remain in silence and keep declaring his innocence and that of many others who are accused aswell. Ofcourse he chooses the second one but this comes with the most brutal consequence which is being hanged to death for being a witch and a lier.
