College Essay
...ever heard before, words in the Chamorro language, being teased for my southern bell accent, and being discriminated against because I was American. Early on I did not understand why I was referred to as an American when everyone who is born on Guam is an American. Every one of us is an American. I soon found out what those words meant, stranger or foreigner finding that out made me feel un- welcomed to this so called island paradise. Not ever being a racist person I found myself on guard and ready to argue to my own defense. Being that it was middle school and children are still growing up. I figured in time they will accept me for me and not my skin color. So high school came and is still going. I find myself facing those same opinions about “Americans”, not only from peers and classmates but also from teachers and other adults. I remember I signed up to take a certain class and right a way the teacher told the class, “White people have taken Guam away from the Chamorro’s.” And, “White people have done nothing but ruin Guam.” This topped it off for me hearing those things; I could not even begin to react. It has been almost 6 years of hearing hurtful or untrue things about my background, my culture, and my “people”.
