A San Francisco judge has certified that any woman currently employed for Wal-Mart or that was employed any time since December 26, 1998 is eligible part of the suit brought against the retailer (Joyner, p. 1). This figures to be as many as 1.6 million women that are eligible to file suit. The suit charges that Wal-Mart has mistreated women when it comes to pay and promotions. Ultimately, this suit hopes to compensate the women that were unfairly treated, and will establish policies preventing such mistreatment in the future. Compensation Gap Last year Wal-Mart had profits over 8 billion dollars, which seems like they have adequate funds to pay their employees, but most of Wal-Mart’s employees, frontline employees, are paid below the poverty line.
