Question 3: Study sources D and E How useful are sources D and E in helping you to understand why the ripper was able to avoid capture?
...was hard to see. Which meant the witness was unable to get a description of his face. One reason from this source is that it tells us the police were slow to act in finding the ripper. An example of this is when it states “he was referred from one police officer to another” this statement tells us that the police didn’t want to know and had no interest in the murder. This was because whitechapel at that time was a run down and dirty city filled with very poor people. This meant that all kind of crime was happening and meant this was just another crime to add to the list of crimes that lead to the police being slow to act and investigate the murders. Source E tells us that the witness had seen the ripper on a dark night. “Some kind of order created on the streets by night” this statement tells us that she or he had seen the ripper at night, which applies to us that it was difficult for the witness to see the ripper because of the lack of light. Source E also helps us to understand why the Ripper avoided capture because in the source it tells us that there are many places for Jack the Ripper to hide such as when it states whitechapel as being “connected by a network of narrow, dark and crocked lanes”. This description describes whitechapel as being a maze with many street and alleyways that allow the ripper to escape from the murder scene and hide in the streets to avoid his capture. We kind out from sources D and E that the sources have implications and have witnesses’ opinions and speculations. Source D is evidence from an eyewitness, which means that the source can’t be completely accurate. The source can’t be considered as being accurate because we have to remember that this evidence is from only one person and means that the evidence can’t be backed up from another source. This also means that the evidence that is given could be wrong and the evidence provided might be about a completely different person. We also have to consider that this source is relying on a person’s memory that means that person might have forgotten information about what they have seen which means we cant consider this source as being reliable. So...
