Experiencing two years of the adrenalin and killing from the war, he becomes sick and starts to hallucinate. Doing so, he kills the town sheriff. Other victims of the war experience were Antonio's three brothers. Coming home from the war safe and unharmed, Antonio's brothers believed they had total control of themselves. Considering themselves as men's created a thought that they could survive individually or without their parent's assistance. With this idea, Antonio's parents were disappointed and hurt. Though his parents were discouraged, they understood why their sons made the decision of leaving. But in any situation, majority of parents will always be helpful and acquire their best effort to their children's work and future. Superstition was a great impact on Antonio's life. He considers in believing in his natural religion, but perceiving to the tale of the golden carp slightly changed his mind. He becomes disturbed from the idea of there being more than one god. ""The golden carp," I said to myself, "a new god?"". He begins to question others for answers, but the same effects occur with Antonio perplexed. He later learns that the golden carp was a help of understanding the differences in belief and a guide to discovering his own identity. Though Antonio was inadequate with the tale of the Golden Carp, it succeeded in expressing his future decisions. The tale's purpose was to prove that every religion offered different, but equal lessons about the world. Throughout the book, Antonio is drawn to many cultures that varied his identity. He tries to seek for answers, but everything seems to confuse him due to the influence of many differentiating cultures. The first conflict has to due with his parents.
