In A Modest Proposal Swift uses extreme satire, like the fact that he wants people to start eating babies, that is satire and he does this to make people think. Verbal Irony occurs when a speaker says something but really means something very different, most of the times it’s the exact opposite of what you really mean. Jonathan Swift uses a big sarcastic tone in order to make his verbal irony clear. Because writers cannot rely on a tone of voice to portray sarcasm, they pile verbal irony on verbal irony, so that the reader can pick up on this. His very crazy solution was to reduce people to breeders and babies to food, risking appearing as a monster so that he could show the monstrous behaviors of others. Alexander Pope uses a lot of satire in his mock poem The Rape of the Lock, these are intended to make us laugh at the weakness of humans and all of our foolish acts and these satires are made so that they sound good natured and make you laugh.
