CHRISTIANITY: There are two very different views to the treatments of infertility (when a couple are unable to have children due to medical reasons) in Christianity. There is the Roman Catholic view, and the views the other Christian Churches follow. Roman Catholic: The Roman Catholic view is that life is given by God and no one has a right to children. They also look to the sanctity of life to help decide what treatments are allowed and what treatments aren’t. The Sanctity of Life means that life is not to be treated badly or discarded thoughtlessly. The Roman Catholic Church allows only methods of which the sex acts are natural, and which don’t threaten the sacredness of life. So all Embryo technology isn’t allowed for Catholics. “Techniques that entail the disassociation of husband and wife , by the intrusion a person other than the couple... are gravely immoral” (Catechism of the Catholic Church) They hold these views because: - IVF involves fertilising several eggs some of which are thrown away or used for experimentation which is a sin for Catholics, because of the sanctity of life.
