Nineteen Eighty-Four and ‘Minority Report’ Warnings of a dark future

...telligent robot spiders crawl and peer into each and everybody’s room. In Nineteen Eighty- Four, Party Members and thought police are using technology to their advantage. Telescreens are placed in every room everywhere so that there is no space where people cannot be seen. This means that they cannot say nor do anything that undermines their authority. Winston Smith was able to find a little corner where he could be alone from the always watching eyes. That did not stop him from getting caught eventually. John Anderton from ‘Minority Report’ also found a way to escape the ever watching eyes by removing his and replacing them with new ones but eventually he was caught to. In Nineteen Eighty-Four and ‘Minority Report,’ leaders use fear to manipulate people’s emotions and makes them give up their freedoms in return for safety. Fear is a method of torturing people; it makes people paranoid, nervous, irritable and jumpy. Winston Smith from Nineteen Eighty-Four knows that if he goes against his government also known as Big Brother, the consequences will be annihilation. Everyone else knows the same, which is what keeps them in line. There is room 101 where they use people’s deepest darkest fears (which is not always death) against them. The thought police, who on the outside look like regular people, but on the inside are sneaky, intelligent, and manipulative individuals who are out to get deviants. While most people seem oblivious to the mindless day to day dribble of the telescreens and the morning workouts, Winston can not help but see it as relentless torture. In ‘Minority Report’ they do not necessarily use physical torture or fears but they use words, images and thoughts to control people. They have commercials running all day long, around the clock saying how great the world is with no crime. They make the people believe that without Pre Crime keeping them safe they as individuals would without a doubt become the next murder victims. What if there was no pre crime? Who would be the next victim of a vicious murderer? Propaganda is used throughout both pieces of work to brainwash people into thinking where they live is perfect. In Nineteen Eighty-Fours Big brother is a god like figure displayed as being ones friend, always looking out for his people. Truly one does not even know if Big Brother even exists and if he does he is nobody’s friend. It is all for the power.
