Much of the trade industry was more interested in the promising business practices that were to come with the separation from the Catholic Church. Class struggle also largely fueled the ruling coalition of merchants to believe that the only way to maintain their status was to align with the Lutheran Reformation. The economic oligarchs presented the Reformation as a subtle means to conserve their individual interests, and to potentially increase their monetary assets and land. The sweeping change that was found among the commoners and working class appears to be because of a popular feeling of change from the feudal system and overpowering Catholic Church.
