...hat the setting is like and have a good touch of the life back in 1930’s. In the novel, Maycomb was described as “old town, but it was a tired old town. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square.” But in the movie, we could only observe the environment around it in black and white and all we knew is that Maycomb is an old town. So, by reading the novel, it can really bring us back in the past and live with it. The movie didn’t describe much about all the characters, some of the main character’s did not even appear in the story, so sometime it is hard to understand the story. In the novel, Nathan Radley is Boo Radley’s brother, and it was told that Boo Radley had stabbed his father and killed him. For some reason in the movie, he happened to be his father, and he didn’t get killed, so at the point of the story we can not really tell how mysterious and how evil Boo Radley was. Therefore, viewers might not be as shocking when they knew it was Boo who saved Jem. Also, the movie had completely cut out the background of the Finch family, it didn’t talk about how they got into Maycomb and lived up there. It makes it seems not important at all in the movie, but by knowing the background, it has significantly helps develop the live of the Finch Family, by knowing more about the Finch family, we would fully understand more about Atticus’ personality and see why he is helping a negro not just because he’s nice. So, reading the novel definitely has an advantage of a better understanding of the characters. The movie also cut down a lot of scenes to reduce the time, and without them, the movie seems less smooth than the novel. In the movie, at least thirty minutes of the movie was spent in the court case, to save up those times, a lot of scenes were left out, although it may not have a gigantic impact to the story, it is still important to have them to be part of the movie. For instance, the movie missed the part where Miss Maudie’s house got burnt down and Boo Radley sneaked out and put a blanket on Scout’s back. It is significant to have that part in the movie because it continue to show how mysterious Boo Radley still was so we would still keep our mind thinking about him, but in the...
