... A major way to insure taht he can always to do, is to continually educate himself. At no time has this beenmore true that at the present with technology seemingly improving at a faster rate all the time. In essence, the issue becomes one of education. Education comes in many forms and it is a two way process: someone or something educates and someone is educated. The educator can be a school, teacher, book or computer. Traditionally, when we think of educators though, we think of the government. Similarly, the educated usually brings to mind young people who are require by law to go to school. However, this issue is not so traditional and becomes more complex because in the majority of workers cases we are dealing with neither of these parties. We are dealing with business, not government, an employees who are beyond the “mandatory” school age. In this case, although many businesses do provide the worker with some form of continuing education in the U.S., it would be wise for the worker to make sure he or she is getting it from somewhere if he or she wants to insure that there will always be “food on the table”. On the other hand, if business and government fail to get involved in this process, they will be the ones who lose out over the long run. They are responsible for maintaining the vision that leads to long term planning that produces economic strength. Although it won’t be evident initially, there is the potential for the loss of jobs to become so great, that demand for products will drop sharply, and that the government’s tax base will erode. In addition, it is people who come up with new ideas for future growth, not machines. People invented technology, not vice-versa. Business may argue that students out of school will be prepared to work with these new technologies and services, but this would fail to take into account the cost of training them to do the required tasks which are usually very job specific.
