...ctims ranged from wealthy Westerners vacationing in some of the world's most posh resorts to Third-World fishermen who had never used a telephone. The imagery, too, has been vivid almost beyond imagination. There was the wave itself. One account said it was 30-feet high and traveling across the ocean at the speed of an airliner. There were the stories of the victims. A survivor from one of the luxury resorts said the tide went out - dramatically so - shortly before the tsunami hit. So rapidly did the water recede that fish were left flopping in its wake and children were running out and trying to grab the fish and toss them into the receding water, the kids going farther and farther out while parents, at first amused and then, perhaps, alarmed, sat on the beach watching. The local workers knew the ocean and they certainly sensed that something was wrong. But what? Then they saw a white line on the horizon. Yes, the imagery was something out of a nightmare.
