Crabbe didn’t like how his father was trying to make him in his mold. This is shown when he says “In their fantasies I was to win piles of scholarships, much acclaim and eventually be famous” (pg. 22). He just wanted to be himself, he didn’t want to be controlled by another human and told what to do for the rest of his life. They kept trying to change him to their liking, not even considering what he wanted. This really agitated Crabbe, he wanted to part of their planned future for him. The parental expectations are what led him to the drinking problem. Crabbe didn’t like his future and didn’t want to be a part of it long before he was going to run away. This is shown when he says “I was sick of my life and already sick of the future... I wanted to be free” (pg. 19). So he had plenty of time to plan his escape. He was already sick of his future because he had no control over it, it is true what is said by Crabbe later in the novel “the person who cares least about the relationship, controls it” (pg. 162). He was the one who was supposed to control his life. He was right, people didn’t care at all about his feelings and emotions, they just wanted him to make them look better.
