Between the lunch and dinner shift, I’m usually home, picking up, doing the things that need taking care of. I’d like to talk to you ” (Nixon 71). Ila works all day to help support Carley for his future education, because she feels it is very important. “She wanted more for Carley where the main source of entertainment for the local men was hunting and fishing and sitting around Slade Snyder’s Drugstore, swapping lies” (Nixon 71). Ila took very good care of Carley. “I could see the pride she had in Carley,” (Nixon 96) says a friend of Ila’s. “Now I knew she (Mrs. Hughes) had a past, a past that colored in the edges and made her more interesting” (Nixon 95). There was a girl named Sara trying to run off with Carley into the city. As concerned as she was about Carley, Ila would do anything to stop them, even kill Sara. Mrs. Hughes is secretly an insane lady, she acts nice and giving, but on the inside, she is much different. Mrs. Hughes murdered two people just to make sure that her grandson has a good future.
