France and Germany both wanted leadership in Europe, and also most all the ethnic groups wanted their own independence. The last cause was the alliance system. Alliances were caused by hostilities, jealousies, fear, and desires. There were two major alliance systems by 1914, the triple entente (the allies) and the triple alliance (central powers). Both alliances provided international security. The immediate cause of World War I was caused by the assassination on Frances Archduke Ferdinand. The assassination was made by a man named Gavrilo Princip. He was a member of the Serbian “Black Hand” society. Now on June 28th, 1914, at Sara Jevo, Bosnia, Gavrilo Princip attends a royal affair in order to see Archduke Ferdinand to make his attack. Princip succeeds in killing Ferdinand and also his wife Sophie. This assassination caused WWI to begin. There were many medical problems during World War I that the soldiers had to deal with. A main problem was the flu epidemic. This illness was brought to the United States by war workers who had come from all over Europe. The epidemic killed over 500,000 Americans, and forty million people died from the flu epidemic world wide. World War I differed from earlier wars that the United States had been involved in because during this war there was a British Blockade.
