...hat themes I have been looking for throughout a reading and discovered that I could only retain superficial knowledge over a broad range. If the instructor had provided a purpose, I would have focus a little on the broad range material and focused attention to a narrower range of material with a more in-depth analysis or understanding. This seemed to be a reoccurrence in my environmental science course two years ago. He provided a thick packet available at Brill. We would read but with little understanding of what the prime objective of the packet was. He then drove us crazy by asking a question from the readings on the exam that no one in the course provided attention towards. He finally dismissed the question but if he had better prepared the intent of the article, we (the students) could have had a greater ability to answer the question at hand. Reading through the inappropriate purposes and creating problems for readers, I find that I have been a victim of nearly all at one point in time. Too narrow in scope, misdirection, and divulging in too much content all are too familiar. There was also mention of teacher directed purpose that in time would allow students to develop their own ability to create purpose. I don’t like the idea simply because of our reading material last week. Each student directs his or her attention to different aspects of reading material. What I find important may be completely irrelevant to the teachers intent of the material. The same goes in reverse.
