A Doll's House
...e Helmers and what I usually took place at their household when I was present. I explained that I was their family doctor and friend for many years and how I visited almost everyday. In Nora’s defense I made it clear to the jury how Nora loved her children and always wanted the best for her family. When her lawyers asked me “what do you think was the reason Nora left?” I bluntly said that she was mistreated in her household. He asked me “why” and “please explain” and questions along this sort. I stated that Torvald Helmer constantly shows no respect to her as a woman and as his wife. I was then interrupted by Torvald’s lawyer and asked to explain why and how that could be possible. The lawyer started trying to convince the jury and the judge that Torvald frequently gave her what she wanted and looked out for her. I had to keep my temper and show self-control when these statements were said. I started raising my voice when I gave details on how he treats her as if she were a pet rather than a human. How he treats Nora like a beautiful and treasured doll, which he can dress up and show off to the world. How he classifies her as his possession. I told them that he calls her his “lark”, his “little song-bird”, his “little dove” and his “squirrel”. The jury and other people in the court did not seem very shocked when I stated these facts. I was disgusted by the way the jury reacted, for they had no sense of compassion or reasoning for women. Considering the jury mostly consisted of men, they did not disagree that women should be a man’s possession. I shared my views on how women are just as important as men and that they should be treated properly. The judge told me I was out of line and I then had to step down. I was so angry that I wanted to cry. I sat back in my original seat and was shocked by what Nora’s other so-called “friends” had to say about her. As time went on I watched Nora’s face and felt so ...
