How the untamable had given up her life to own.
...ines so bright”. Petruchio: “….It shall be moon or star or what I list, or ere I journey to your father’s house”. Kate: “….And be it moon or sun or what you please”. Petruchio: “I say it is the moon”. Kate: “I know it is the moon”. Petruchio: “Nay, you lie. It is the blessed sun!” (IV, v, 3-18) This example shows how Petruchio bothers Kate and forces her to admit that he is right when she knows he is wrong. The reason Kate agrees with Petruchio is because she wants to “escape from the situation.” The decision of whether Kate wants either one choice or another is usually based on her choices but Petruchio conveys the question in a cruel way to make her feel tense. Kate sees how Petruchio behaves at home, “Petruchio looks mindlessly foolish”. What is meant by this he is like a “mirror” for Kate. She sees her flaws and foolishness and how she acts in public. Evidently, of all the hardships that Kate has been going through with Petruchio, shows that she would rather stay with him because there is no one that truly does cares for her and would want to bring Kate and her shrewish behaviour, into their own houses and still be able to live peacefully with her and that is why the submission of Kate takes place. In her final speech, Kate uses many vivid words to show how she feels that submission to a husband is indeed necessary for women. She uses words like “….thy lord, thy king, thy governor/” (V, ii, 143). These words interpret Kate’s thoughts and feelings about how husbands should be treated. Kate directs her speech to the widow and her sister, Bianca, specifically informing them that their husbands are their leaders and they are not the followers of the wives. Kate also mentions how women are now becoming very shrew-like humans and nuisances, when they should be very respectful to the people around them. The words Kate uses to elaborate her thoughts are conveyed in a straight forward way. As Kate reads her speech aloud, she wishes everyone would understand the speech clearly because it does not contain any in-depth meanings. “The tamed Kate as a grateful, loving and even triumphant woman who embraces the role of the wife offering her speech about the supremacy of man as a gift to a husband who has shown her the error of her ways”. (Hundertmark, Page 4) As Petruchio “tames” Kate, she realizes how grateful to her husband she is. As Kate reads aloud in her speech, she says her hand is ready if her husband wants to put it under his foot. But, the speech is not to show people that Petruchio has finally tamed Kate, but is performed for herself, in order to survive, to eat and sleep and to live gratefully with her companion. To conclude, Kate has submitted to her husband Petruchio and this is evident because of the words in Kate’s speech. They are put together to form a clear and understandable meaning to her audience, the widow, Bianca and all the other women who have husbands. Kate’s speech is not meant to be in depth because the submission to her husband clearly reveals that these words that Kate chooses have no other meaning to convey but to inform women of their duty towards their husbands. So, this is how the words in Kate’s speech contribute to her submission at the end of the play. The life around Kate changes as she transforms from a shrew-like woman into a respectful lady. One example of this is her husband, Petruchio. At first, when Kate was very shrewish, she would always deny what Petruchio would say to her. But as she slowly became tamed by him, she respects him more and has a special performance towards him. An example is the sun and moon that is stated in the book, The Taming of the Shrew (IV, v, 3-18). As Kate and Petruchio newly met, Kate would always contradict Petruchio to try and prove her point and convey a stronger personality. But through the play, she finds herself going absolutely nowhere as she continues to go with her judgments. She starts to listen to him and agree on what he says to get a living. Therefore, after she is tamed, her relativity with Petruchio is much better. Another example is Kate’s father, Baptista. He would not allow Bianca to get married before Kate had received a husband. As Kate is coming to Petruchio, when she receives a call fro...
