... bus. There’s always a reason humans have to fight over something. Hobbes states “we find three principle causes of quarrel. First, competition; secondly, diffidence; thirdly, glory.” First everyone wants to be the best and do well even without taking into consideration the others. During the game we find ourselves in a competition, were we want to win and be the best. But the Comuna 13 team wouldn’t accept this infamous moment and lose their patience to break out into a battle. In the novel there is a perfect example of how competition can get really dreadful and rough. One of the essential concerns in the book is the conflict between 2 competing feelings every human has. The 2 competing feelings are the natural feeling to live by rules, act peacefully, consider others and to fight over power, fulfill one’s wishes, and impose one’s wills. In the book the conflict is mainly by Ralph and Jack. Jack’s desire to get power is so important to him; he would do anything to fulfill his wishes. Jack wants to be the best and the leader, so he would act violently to fight Ralph. The mayhem that is lived at the island is very noticeable and is all about a competition for leadership. As Hobbes states: “The first maketh men invade for gain, the second, for safety; and the third for reputation” we always want to gain power with competition, try to keep it (diffidence), and lastly for honor (reputation). During the game the winning team would be the one that holds the power, and keeps the honor, but the loosing team keeps looking for power and their reputation is upsetting. To show toughness and power what many people do is go to war or create a fight. Kicking other’s butt would keep your reputation really high, and that’s what Comuna 13 team did even if they didn’t win the game.
