Not only did Jonas question authority about releasing, he eventually left the community because of the sameness which was so strictly enforced in the community. . In the act of leaving the community he broke many rules; he stole food, kidnapped Gabrielle and stole a bike equipped with a seat in the back for Gabrielle. The riding of another person’s bike was forbidden, this simple act was considered a very serious offense. And only a nonconformist would even think about breaking this rule. One of the most prominent traits of Jonas is his compassion. His compassion was one of the more minor traits in the beginning of the book. The first obvious signs of his compassion became apparent when Jonas was doing service hours at the house of the elderly while he was bathing Larissa.
