... The kissing scene in the movie makes the feelings of the two more real. It gives you a more clear sense of just how much they like each other. The book is more gradual of a depiction of their situation. It takes the last scene in the book to fully realize what exactly was going on, but in the movie it gives you this hint and it’s easier to put together the puzzle. Another difference was that the narrator in the book was a worker residing in Starkfield and working a few towns away. But in the movie, the narrator is the towns new Pastor. The idea of him being a pastor makes a lot of things in the book easier to put together. Such as why he wanted to know about Ethan Frome and his family. Him being a worker leaves him the option of curiosity as his motivation for learning more. But as a pastor it’s more that just curiosity, in a way it’s part of his job. His concern seems more sincere when driven by a real purpose, and not solely curiosity. The book showed that the couple tried to steer into the tree and that it was their plan to attempt to kill themselves by doing so. But in the movie the sledding accident was treated as just that, an accident. The book showed that the two were so unhappy with the way things were that they’d be better off dead than live without each other. But the movie just showed it being the last promise Ethan made to Mattie, and that he was following through with it, when it went horribly wrong. In this case I’d say the book did a bet...
