Today, we find that rich and poor people live within proximities of each other and have to work together on voting for judges, mayors, governors, etc. The tribes Cleisthenes made are similar to our counties. Sparta had a council of elders which was made up of 28 members over the age of 60 years old and retired from the military. They are like our Supreme Court. The ancient Roman civilization has also impacted our government. The Roman patricians took over the city because they were the descendants of the first to inhabit Rome. They declared Rome as a republic. The United States is technically a republic, but we refer to ourselves as a democratic-republic. They developed a senate comprised of 300 patricians.
