Further to the Master Plan, the Government of Viet Nam has proposed developing a new port system in the Vung Tau area (Cai Mep and Thi Vai) for container and general cargo, and Hiep Phuoc area for general cargo. The new port system is proposed for development to meet economic growth targets up to 2010. Now, Saigon Port is seeking financing/funding for the following projects. 2. Investment merit and prospect (expected results) Develop a port at the center of Southeast Asian international distribution in preparation of the 21st century. Make provision for accommodation requirements of international shipping vessel tonnage: more than 30,000GRT (first phase); more than 60,000GRT (second phase). Make provision for incoming vessels: 2,300 including 1,800 container vessels per year (first phase); 3,100 including 2,500 container vessels per year (second phase). Make provision for cargo handling capacity: more than 13.5 million metric ton/year (first phase); more than 17 million metric ton/year (second phase).
