Face
...od his ground and told Pete that he didn’t want to but the more Pete tried to persuade him, the more Martin thought about his image. I think it was when Pete said to Martin in quite a patronising way “ All right, ya gotta get to bed, we’ll just take ya home” I think this is when Martin began to weaken and agreed to get in the car thinking he was he was just getting a lift home. Mark also agreed to get into the car, I think he only agreed to get in because, Martin was going and Martin is quite a strong character and Mark looks up to him and wants to be like him. Once they had got in the car it speed away that’s when the police began to chase them the car then got hit and rolled over. Martin was severely injured. ‘When the paramedics turned up martin’s face was badly burnt and his body hung limp and lifeless’ this is how the book described it. Later on, in hospital once Martin had woke up he was told most of his burns would heal themselves without any treatment. He was then told that his face had come out the worst and that it would never look the same again, he was told he had deep facial burns and would have to eventually have to have a skin graft carried out. The nurses warned him that it would not be a good idea and that he should wait a while, Martin seemed to be very determined to get his own way, when he looked in the mirror for the first time he suffered a silent shock, he found it hard to look away, he felt so scared looking at his own face. Martin needed a lot of support after is accident which I think would be quite difficult for him to accept as he seemed to be quite and independent person before his accident. He had to cope with people reacting to him in different ways, people would often stare at him, not on purpose but this would make martin feel very self-conscious. Some children would call him names and run away from him, as they were scared of his face. Things like that really hurt Martin and affected him a lot. Martin’s main source of support was Alan Green, a councillor from the hospital. Alan was always there for him. He was very patient and understanding towards Martin. He seemed to be good at his job and gave Martin some very good advice, which helped him come to terms with the way he looked. I think Martin built up a lot of trust in Alan, as he seemed to confide in him and tell him many things that he wasn’t able to tell anybody else about. I think Martin had a lot of respect for Alan, this shows how the accid...
