Lord of the flies character analysis
...he conch. He picked up the conch out of the water and began talking about a man he had known who had one on his wall. "He used to blow it and then his mum would come." he told Ralph. Piggy was just unable to blow the conch himself because of his asthma. He represents the scientific rational side of society, even down to the description of him. If I were asked to describe a scientist, a fat guy with glasses comes to mind. After the first couple days Piggy suggested using a stick to create a sundial to tell time, which most of the other boys just laughed off as a joke, even if it was a pretty smart idea. Piggy's weight and appearance also certainly do effect the way the boys treat him, often not even considering what he says. "If I say anything,...you say shut up; but if Jack or Maurice or Simon-" Jack also treats Piggy especially poorly after Jack left the fire to go hunting. "This from Piggy, and the wails of agreement from some of the hunters, drove Jack to violence...and able at last to hit someone, stuck his fist into Piggy's stomach." So instead of taking his frustrations out on the 'chief' Jack just goes for the little guy Piggy. Ralph and Piggy were together throughout most of the book. Piggy worked as the brains, and Ralph as the leader. They shared a lot of the same beliefs when it came to being civilized with law and order. Working together, they gathered all of the children, where Ralph began to take charge as a leader to set up a plan. He starts by leaving Jack in charge of the choir to be the hunters. Then he attempts to coordinate the boys to build shelters. Ralph was also the one suggests a fire to signal a passing ship. The fire was a big cause of dissagreement between him and Jack, but ultimately was the reason they were found. Throughout the book, Ralph struggles with the boys to work together as civilized human beings because that is what he believed was right. He tries to keep himself from succumbing to Jacks savage actions, but finds it truely difficult. "He meant to refuse meat, but his past diet of fruits and nuts, with an odd crab or fish, gave him little resistance." Jack is someone who is truely savage, violent, and desires power over everything. When he was first presented with an opportunity to lead, he was shut down with a unanimous vote for Ralph as lead...
