Greta on other hand had to leave her town to sell her hand made brooms, so that she and her eight year old kid can physically survive. On her way back she was trapped in a blizzard, she didn’t have any supplies, nor was she dressed properly. Her only means of survival was her determination and her courage. No matter how well anyone is prepared to survive the difficult circumstances, it’s the will power that makes all the survival possible. The authors of both the stories have given a good example of will power and determination through Greta and George. Both survived the cruelties of the blizzard. Wallace and Hubbard hired George as their guide. George didn’t know much about the Labrador area but he survived, he also survived the trip to New York, he was new to the city, he had to go there to meet Wallace and Hubbard. Similarly Greta had to go to a town which was far from her house to sell her brooms, because no shop keeper would buy her brooms. She reached the three mile far town successfully, but she was trapped in a blizzard on her way back home. She was unprepared in a sense that she had a thin coat which couldn’t handle the freezing cold and she didn’t have a fire to guide her through the thick and dark night. She reached a point where she wasn’t sure if there was an ocean ahead, she had to move because standing there meant certain death. George had to make a some what similar decision, when he was walking alone, he killed a porcupine, he had a choice of going back so that he can share it with Wallace and Hubbard, but was certain that if he goes back he know no one will be able to make it alive from there, so he decided to eat the porcupine and go alone so that he can look for any help and save the others. A little courage and selfishness can sometimes work towards the survival of an individual. Surviving physically is not the only factor, spiritual survival is also very important.
