...band because of the fear of not having him come home. She expresses self-denial by denying herself the life of happiness someplace else and with someone else. She kind of realizes this when she says, “And anyway, sometimes she asked herself, why sit trying to talk with a man who never talked? Why talk when there was nothing to talk about but crops and cattle” (Sinclair Ross, Pg. 310). Also when she says, “John never enjoyed himself. He was always uncomfortable in his good suit and shoes” (Sinclair Ross, Pg. 310). She realizes the fact that she has a life with a farmer and yet she still has that little glimmer of hope that she will enjoy it, when she clearly knows it wont happen any time soon. The author presents anxiety by having the wife paint although its winter, just to get her mind off of the current situation and by having her invite her husband’s friend over and by slightly having feelings for him. All of these detailed descriptions of the characters and their actions only says two things about the author. These things would be that he either has experienced or is experiencing many of the emotions expressed in the story since he is able to convey them so vividly, or because he has an in-depth knowledge about human emotion. It is also similar in, “The Rocking Horse”. The story in a sense revolves around a little boy. The boy is the one who engages all of the other characters into doing things, asks the most questions and promotes a sense of suspense. Although at a young age the little boy, in a sense takes form of an adult since he says and does things which on a regular basis would be said and done by adults. One of the things which the boy speaks about is luck. He Recognizes the problem and sets out to resolve it through gambling, and this is where he engages his father in also taking action. The boy realizes this money dilemma when he and his mother are talking when they say, “Is luck money mother? No, Paul. Not Quite. It’s what causes you to have money”. The boy engages the characters into doing things through gambling, such as his father and his uncle which thereby creates a sense of suspense because gambling leads to addiction which eventually in the end leads to either luck, which he is trying to grasp or misfortune.
