The battle with the fish lasted many days and without his self confidence and discipline he would not have been able to accomplish the catching of the great fish. Santiago is an excellent fisherman that is extremely skillful in the sport of fishing. He knows how and where to find fish, by following birds that are circling above the water. He is able to tell what currents to fish and how deep and fast to fish them. He shows great skill when he first hooks the great fish. He always seemed to know what the fish was going to do and when he was going to do it. “He has the hook sideways in his mouth and he is moving off with it.” This direct quote from the book that shows how knowledgeable Santiago is of fishing. Throughout the book he is always able to tell when the fish is going to surface and needs to prepare himself to keep tension on the line so that the fish doesn’t make the hole bigger in his mouth, so that the hook is bale to fall out. But Santiago is not one to boast or show off his skill of fishing or his accomplishments in his time. One time when Santiago was younger he arm wrestled a Negro from Sanfuago, who was of great size and had never been beaten before in the game of arm wrestling.
