Inspector Calls Essay
...re for the people living on breadline? Avarice, ego and pride can also be ones downfall in life. One cannot do without these elements, but we can maintain a balance of these elements. In ‘An Inspector Calls,’ Mr. Birling is the materialistic man. His wants have no limit. If people do not start realizing this, “then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish.” “…a man has to make own way – has to look after himself – and his family too, of course…” This is the motto of corrupted man like Mr.Birling. Mr. Birling keeps all the money he earns and pays only a small part of that to the workers. There is one man, the worlds most curropt former heads of government, singling out leaders of Indonesia, Philippines and the former Zair. This man is Suharto. When he was in power of Indonesia, he developed a strong government party, New Order. His first big money-making venture was the Borasari flour mills, which milled wheat imported from USA. As the years passed, he invested, which include banks, automobiles manufacturing and cigarettes manufacturing. Most of the forty three billion dollars he earned went in his family and his pocket money. He is currently the sixth richest man in the world with a personal wealth of an estimate sixteen billion dollars. People all around the world abuse their power. Politicians, parents, teachers or any other person in authority commit abuse of power when she/he uses public trust, public money, public property or market leverage to their advantage. These people believe that with the power, they can do anything. As the Inspector quotes, “Public men, Mr. Birling, have responsibilities, as well as privileges.” A fine situation like this is still prevalent in Thailand. If citizens in Thailand break traffic laws they can get away with bribery. They can just pay few hundred baht and no ticket is issued to them. Is that what policemen are supposed to be doing? In ‘An Inspector Calls,’ Mr. Birling also abuses his power but in a more mild way. He claims that he,”… was an alderman for years – and Lord Mayor two years ago – and I’m still on the Bench…” Mr. Birling, having directed this statement to the Inspector, hints at a position of power and thus intimidates the inspector. Another fine example would be when the US and British troops abused their power on the Iraqi troops by harassing them and torturing them. Who are they to do that? They had no right to commit such a cruel act. The problem of abuse of power and authority is going on till today and I think it will continue until people start seeing other people’s point of view. Power is not only used to intimidate someone, it can also alter someone’s life forever. Has there been a time in your life when you were walking on Sukhumvit road or any other area, and you do not come across a single homeless person? These people are either left homeless due to floods, earthquakes or any other natural disaster or even deserted by their parents. These homeless people have been exploited. For women, the main and most common path taken is to turn to prostitution. Has there been a time when you drove back home and not see a prostitute? Prostitution is a major issue in the world today but that is their means of supporting their family and themselves. In Thailand, prostitution is one of the main tourist ...
