... a transient store for what we happen to be attending to at any particular time; in short it is our working memory. With short-term memory there is a limit of how much it can hold and for how long you are able to retain the information. Long-term memory is our relatively permanent knowledge of the world. When learning new information and trying to store it in the long term memory, its slow and interferes with comprehension. I understand surface structure, which is the visual information that our eyes pick up while reading, like text, pictures, and marks on a page. You must bring meaning to text rather than expecting to get meaning from it. An example of this is “there” sounds “their” and they both have different meanings. Deep structure is another term for meaning, which can be represented by more than one surface structure. Surface structure may have more than one deep structure; an example of this is the word “bat” which could mean something like a baseball bat or a flying bat. In order to understand surface structure readers must put meaning to text themselves. I understand what good books for children are, you have to have an understanding of the ways that readers respond to literature, and at different ages their views differ. Also Reading books of different cultures helps children see the particular ways people vary from culture to culture and try hard to get along. I understood what makes the three main qualities of children’s literature, where you need to have a child protagonist and things that deal with children. Books for younger children usually has a straightforward storyline, telling the story straight through from problem to solution without having flashbacks. These types of stories have a setting that is in one place, concentrate on one or two main characters, and cover short time periods. Another quality of a children’s book that I understood is that in children’s books and picture books mainly name actions and actors. Books without pictures need to go into a little more detail to help the children see the characters and the setting. After realizing the main qualities of children’s literature you need to understand qualities of a good children’s book. Good books expand awareness, by letting children view things in others perspectives, they expand children’s understanding of the world and capability for understanding others and their way of living. Good books are enjoyable to the reader; the stories are about something they have a theme, and its possible to get a lesson from them. But if a book is obviously blunt about teaching a lesson children will not put up with it. Good books usually deal with significant facts about human experiences. Good books exemplify quality, by having believable characters, and a convincing plot. Books of this nature have integrity; the plot, theme, characters and overall book all come together to make a satisfying whole. Good books also show originality, by introducing readers to distinctive characters, or situations or show the world from a different viewpoint. They expand the mind of rea...
