When Sister makes a comment about the child not being adopted, her mother says, "Why Sister, here I thought we were going to have a pleasant 4th of July, and you start right out not believing a word your own baby sister tells you." This is the beginning of another dramatic situation. Sister is then slapped after replying, "just like Cousin Annie Flow. Went to her grave denying the facts of life." Sister thinks that Stella-Rondo is spoiled. Sister recounts a flashback to their childhood saying, "she's always had anything in the world she wanted and then she throws it away. Papa-Daddy gave her this gorgeous Add-a-pearl necklace when she was eight years old and she threw it away playing baseball when she was nine,with only two pearls." Sister always feels that her family takes Stella-Rondo's side. These are also examples of complications in the story. The family is constantly fighting with one another. In one situation, Stella-Rondo creates a conflict by making a reference to their grandfather's long beard. Grandfather, whom they refer to as Papa-Daddy, has been growing this beard since he was 15 years old. Stella-Rondo says to Papa-Daddy, "Papa-Daddy, Sister fails to understand why you don't cut off your beard?" Papa-Daddy was so infuriated by the question that he calls Sister a "Hussy."
