An investigation on how the concentration of the solution of sugar affects the movement of water molecules by osmosis

...ill also use the same ruler Changing one of these variables will result in a change on the rate of osmosis. METHOD: The apparatus I will need is listed below: Ÿ 50cm3 1.0 moles per dm3 Ÿ 20cm30.5 moles per dm3 Ÿ 20cm30.1 moles per dm3 Ÿ 400cm3 Distilled water Ÿ 5 petri dishes Ÿ 1 white tile Ÿ 1 scalpel Ÿ 1 ‘J’ cloth Ÿ 1 cork borer Ÿ 3 beakers Ÿ 1 50cm3 measuring cylinder Ÿ Neutral red solution Ÿ Ruler Ÿ 1 10cm3 pipette Ÿ 1 25cm3 measuring cylinder Ÿ Measuring scale Ÿ Sticky labels The apparatus will be set up as shown below: Ÿ Use the cork borer to cut out 15 potato pieces, measure and cut them to specified length (5cm) then place them on the white tile Ÿ Weigh and measure the length of the potato cuttings Ÿ Place 3 potato cuttings into each petri dish Ÿ Put 5 different concentrations of sugar solution (1,0.75,0.5,0.1 and 0.0 molar) in each petri dish (the total volume of the petri dish should be 50cm3). Ÿ Label and weigh each petri dish Ÿ Leave the petri dish in a place with sunlight for 5 hours Ÿ Re-weigh potato cuttings and petri dish Ÿ Measure the length of the potato cuttings. Ÿ Clean area with ‘J’ cloth Ÿ Record results SAFETY PRECAUTIONS: Even though this experiment is quite safe there a still things that I will need to be aware of like the handling of the scalpel because it is very sharp, I also need to be cautious when handling the sugar solutions because it could easily spill and go into someone’s eye. From the information given from my graph I can say that the higher the concentration of the sugar soloution the less the potato cutting weighed after the experiment. My graph shows that the suger concentration and the weight were almost preportional e.g. 5.9 with 1.0 molar and 10.1 with 0.5 molar, this is shown on ...
