...ncles do care about her, but see her wicked father in her and want nothing to do with her. Sure, they will take her for a weekend or a couple of days, feed her and take her out, but they wouldn’t even think about keeping her permanently. Ellen’s grandmother is the one that eventually takes care of her…but not willingly. Ellen’s outlook on family life is very sad, and wants change. A picture perfect Family. This is what Ellen wants and dreams of. In the book, Ellen is looking through a magazine, and stumbles upon a picture of a happy family. “ I had to have something to do so mostly I played catalog. I picked out the little family first and then the house things and the clothes. Sleepwear, evening jackets for the man, pantsuits. I outfitted everybody. The mom, the dad, the cute children (Pg.26).” This quote shows how Ellen wanted her family to be. She dreamed of all of these perfect little things for her own family. It makes sense though, for Ellen to dream. Her family life is awful and I couldn’t blame her for dreaming of a better life. When Ellen goes to church with her aunt, she notices a family of all sorts of ages of kids. She asks who that family was, and her cousin told her it was the “Foster Family”. Ellen didn’t know what foster meant, so she figured it was their last name. She hoped and wished she could be in a sort of family like that, with a loving and caring mother, and nice siblings. The church arranges for Ellen to be put into the Foster family because she needs to be with someone legally, since her grandmother died.
