... When they saw that he had a talent for writing. While at college he met and graduated with Henry Longfellow and Franklin Pierce who influenced him to become a writer himself. Another event is when his determination to become a writer even after the failure of his first book Fanshawe a book based on his college life. He continued to write even though others didn’t like his writing. The third event is when Hawthorne received injuries during a ball game, which led to spending more time indoors reading the works of Shakespeare, John Bunyan, and other authors. Beginning to love reading their works, he began being influenced by them. The fourth event that influenced his writing was living in an old mansion and being sensitive to guilt because of his fore father, Judge Hawthorne had a curse from a witch, which was put into his novel The House of the Seven Gables. The major topics that Hawthorne wrote about were usually things that were in his family. One subject he wrote about was being sensitive to guilt. Another subject he wrote about was nature because of the time he spent in the woods while living in Maine. Hawthorne became famous for his two books, Twice-Told Tales and Mosses from an Old Manse. That made him famous because they were the collection of all the stories he wrote during his time. II. Characterization In The House of the Seven Gables there are four main characters: Hepzibah, Phoebe, Clifford, and Holgrave. First of all there’s Hepzibah who's from the Pyncheon family. She's an old lady who has lived in the house for twenty-five years waiting for her brother Clifford to be released from jail. She doesn't seem to live in reality because not many people are willing to wait for their brothers to come out of jail for twenty-five years. Although the next character, Phoebe, Hepzibah’s cousin is a bright and cheerful person, she isn't fond of mysterious people. She's realistic because she portrays the optimistic person and always has a good attitude about any event that happens. The third character is Hepzibah’s brother, Clifford. His ghostly personality is portrayed through his speech and appearance. There are people in the world who are also ghostly and greedy which shows that Clifford is realistic. Last of all is Holgrave who is a descendent of Matthew Maule and lives in one of the seven gables. His occupation is an artist and photographer. He is realistic because he has motivation, passion and is sympathetic. Being a man of honor, he shows the reality of an honest and hardworking man in real life. In the book some of the characters change. First of all, Hepzibah change is a minor one. At first, he was depressed and lonely but he met Phoebe but cheered him up with her brightness. The second character is Phoebe who doesn't change drastically because she isn't a hating figure and ended up marrying Holgrave. Another non-changing figure is Clifford. He stays greedy from the beginning, ever since he tried to steal money from Colonel Pension. The last character is Holgrave who like Hepzibah has a minor change only because he married Phoebe. The main character in novel is Hepzibah who has three main traits: stubbornness, hospitality, and kindness. An example of the first trait is when he refused to let Phoebe stay in the house since it might disturb Clifford even though she's his cousin. “ “No! She can only stay one night,” said Hepzibah, unbolting the door.” “If Clifford were to find her here, it might disturb him!” ” (Page 51). An example of the second trait is shown when Hepzibah says “What a nice little body she is! If she could only be a lady, who - but that's impossible! Phoebe is no Pension, she takes everything after her mother.” (Page 59). The last trait kindness is shown when he lets a little boy take gingerbread for free. “No matter for the money...it seems such pitiful meanness to take the child's pocket money in exchange for a bit of stale gingerbread,” he said. (Page 36) In conclusion, Hepzibah’s three main traits are shown all throughout the book, which are stubbornness, hospitality and kindness. III. Plot The House of the Seven Gables starts out with Colonel Pyncheon killing Matthew Maule for not letting him buy the house. Then after a long time a woman named Hepzibah opens up a cent shop in the house to support herself. The third event is when Phoebe, who is Hepzibah’s cousin comes to live with her in the house.
