The book opens with Somerset thinking about his forthcoming retirement from the police. But his plan it thwart by a new case. A grossly overweight man, who has been fed for 12 hours by someone, was found dead, with his face in a plate of spaghetti. Behind his fridge detective Somerset finds the word GLUTTONY with blood on the wall painted. At the same day detective David Mills joins the homicide department. William Somerset is not very happy about that. He thinks David Mills has not enough experience for this case. Two days later, the police find the next corpse. It’s the body of the well-known defence lawyer Eli Gould. For him no criminal was to nasty to defend. If his clients could pay enough, he would do anything to defend them and help them to escape punishment. On the floor stands the word GREED. The captain of the homicide department puts Mills on the case. Somerset finds the link of the cases when he thought about the two words. He remembered that gluttony and greed are two of the seven deadly sins. W. Somerset warns his colleagues to expect more murder. Detective Somerset has to help Mills with the investigation and so he delays his retirement. The next homicide victim is Victor Dworkin, a very lazy man. The police find him chained on his bed. For about one year he had been fed and kept alive. He appeared to be dead, but when they look at him exactly they note that he is still alive. On the wall over the bed stands SLOTH. The third dead sin. With a list of people who borrowed special books they find the home of the murder John Doe, but he can escape. One day later in the Hot House Massage Parlor a woman was killed by a very brutal way. This time LUST had been painted on the wall. Only envy wrath and pride still missed.
