... over everything they possibly could when they got into Africa. All they wanted was to dominate the trade industry. The British had bought the Suez Canal away from the french by taking the majority of the Canals shares. The British had discovered diamond mines in Africa as well. They made over 2,000,000 pounds in profit in 1870. The British also took over control of the economy in Africa. During the building of the Suez Canal, Egypt lost 125 000 men because the British had control over who worked there. The British just wanted to take all they could. All the British cared about was gaining world power. After the Suez Canal operations the British had control over three world continents. Europe, North America and Africa, all were in Britains power. Britain needed to compete with France and Germany. Britain and France had began a race for Niger in 1883. Britain also wanted to control the worlds industry. Mineral discoveries in the 1860's made Britain the most dominant county in the worlds trade. The British were successful in gaining world power. The British forced the civilization of Africa through Imperialism to gain more money and control. The Europeans were very harsh on the Africans. The British originally entered Africa to convert the natives to Christianity. The British attempted to protect former land holdings. They wanted to spread an English style of government. The British also forced the Africans out of their tribes and put them to work. There were 1,000,000 Egyptians involved with the building of the Suez Canal. The English felt they needed to force civilization in order to stay in better control. The British expanded their army while in Africa. Proving that they were there only to take control using violence. They expanded their army to 500,000 because they wanted to protect their new found diamond field. The diamond field was home to many Boers which caused the Boer people to revolt. The Boers were defeated by the British. Their army was only as big as 88,000. Once the British took control of the Boers they were in even more power. The treaty of Verneegiging was signed and the Boers were called Afrikaners, leaving the British in control of them. Expanding their army proves that the British only entered Africa for their own interest’s in power. Some others may argue that the British entered Africa for the purpose of good and not for power and wealth. Some people may say that Britain was an anti-slave nation and wanted to eliminate the slave trade in Africa..When in Africa, Britain attempted to eliminate the Swahili slave trade in 1869 and were successful in most areas but could not eliminate. There was one African who really helped out with the elimination of the slave trade.
