Volta discovered that it was the presence of the metal that caused to the legs of the frog to jump. Unlike Galvani who used dead frogs Volta did his experiments and no frogs were injured. This experiment leads to the invention of the voltaic pile and the electric battery. Volta’s design of the voltaic pile is the design for the modern day wet cell battery. It consists of a series of metal disks of two kinds, separated by cardboard disks soaked with acid or salt solutions. Many inventors after Volta improved on the design of the battery. One of these inventors was Thomas Edison. Thomas Edison invented the alkaline storage battery. He has around 141 patents for the storage battery. He deiced to improve on the battery because at the time it was big bulky, unsafe and unreliable. It took Edison approximately twenty years to perfect his alkaline battery. In the end the alkaline battery was safer and less corrosive. It also last longer than the batteries of his time. He sold his batteries to submarines, electric vehicles; provide backup power for railroad crossing signals, and to provide power for the lamps used in mines. Edison’s work paved the way for the modern alkaline battery. The link between frog’s legs and Thomas Edison includes: the experiments of Galvani with the applying of electricity to a frog and making the frog’s legs contract; Volt’s discovery that the metal cause the legs of a frog to jump and the invention of the battery; and Thomas Edison with his improvement by inventing the alkaline battery.
