...mont. Most of the Allied forces were hidden behind a ridge, with the exception of General Bylandt’s Dutch-Belgian Brigade, which was forced to retreat. At 1pm, Napoleon’s French Grand Artillery Battery opened fire, as troops advanced on La Haye Sainte. Napoleon intercepted a message to Wellington revealing the location of the Prussian troops in St.Lambert and he sent infantry and cavalry to engage them. As French troops punched through at La Haye Sainte, Wellington sent reserves to plug the hole. These troops were able to fight the French back away from La Haye Sainte. After losing many cavalry, the Duke withdrew his troops to the ridge, and reinforced La Haye Sainte, there were fierce artillery battles at Hougoumont and St. Lambert. At 3pm, knowing that La Haye Sainte was the centre of the Allied defense, Napoleon ordered Marshal Ney to capture it. After trying cavalry, he failed, as no fresh infantry were ready and the artillery had to cease-fire, otherwise friendly troops would be killed. Later, infantry were able to take La Haye Sainte, which enabled the artillery to pin down Allied infantry at the ridge. When Ney requested reinforcements, Napoleon responded with “ Where do you expect me to get them from? Do you want me to grow them!”. He was more concerned with the Prussians advancing to his right, who had captured Plancenoit.
