Furthermore, this cartoon takes quite a pessimistic look at the life of an elderly person in which one loses their independency. So even though this cartoon portrays the inevitable outcomes of change, it omits how positive changes can be brought out through time and lived experiences, for instance, wisdom. The visual text by Leunig demonstrates clearly that time and lived experiences could bring about a shift or change in perspectives. in this case it is the aging and the maturation of the little boy eventually becoming an older man. This is shown clearly by leunig’s effective use of the physical characteristics of the young boy gradually changing in physical appearances and then becoming to an older man. Leunig also suggests that whilst people age, resulting in a number of changes, the same things still stay the same. For the example when the character was a young boy, he was too young to do anything so he was dependent on others. The body language and the boy clasping the hand of an adult show this. Similarly, at the last stage, as an older and becoming a more fragile man, he also relies on others. This too is shown by him clasping the hands of another person. Linking with other text The poem “My Father Began as a God” by Ian Mudie also highlights the concept that time and lives experiences can bring a shift and change in perspective. Like the cartoon, the composer of the poem undergoes change of his perspectives towards his father, as he got older.
