...nts and friends lined the sidelines, she would take the field with ten other teammates. The smile on her face when she would score a goal would run from ear to ear. They would play their hearts out for what seemed like forever, up and down the field, up and down the field. I use the phrase “play their hearts out”, and sometimes they would come off the field with them broken, and other times with them pounding out of their chest with happiness. It seemed so simple. Stephanie enjoyed playing soccer and she was very good at it. Always labeled, “the little star” of the team. Her coaches marveled at her foot skills, and tenacity. Her ability to use her speed to juke the defender and place the ball in the back of the net was uncanny. Soccer was a sport that at five years old was a fall and spring sport, with plenty of time for other activities. Soccer was something she did for fun and to keep active. If winning was a part of that great, if not that was fine too. It all changed for her the spring she was twelve. That was the end of recreational soccer ended and the beginning of premier soccer. Premier soccer meant a tryout, having to be evaluated, and picked for a team. As confident as Stephanie is on the outside, she is a bundle of nerves on the inside. “What if they don’t like me, and don’t think I can play soccer”, I remember her saying. “I am not going to brownnose, or make others look bad to make myself look good, they will either think I am good or they won’t”. That is when she started to have doubts and everything turned upside down. That is also, when her parents found out the lengths other parents will go to in order for their daughters to make the “A” team. Stephanie made a conscious decision that year to work hard to make the final “Red” team roster of eighteen. After several weeks of practices, evaluations, and drills the roster was announced.
