It’s maybe a thousand years old and even if it belonged to me I wouldn’t say so.” Rachel’s mood is important in this story because if her mood isn’t expressed, then the reader would not know how she is feeling. And if they don’t know how she’s feeling then the will not know how she feels about the fact that she has been wrongfully accused. Secondly, in this story, the author uses a symbol to describe Rachel. The symbol that is used to describe Rachel is the ugly red sweater. The red sweater is a symbol of what one of Rachel’s sweaters would never look like. She is so positive that the red sweater is not hers because it is so repulsive. The sheer thought of the sweater disgusted her. Although this sweater does not symbolize very much, it does have a great impact on the story. This story revolves around this hideous red sweater which makes this sweater an unforgettable symbol. The entire story is about a girl and a red sweater that is said to be hers but in reality is not. Therefore the sweater can also symbolize the deception. The sweater can also symbolize deception because a young girl name Silvia Saldivar tell both of the girls teacher that the sweater belongs to Rachel. Lastly, Figurative language is used to describe Rachel. More specifically, metaphor’s are used to describe her. In the story she wishes that she could be one hundred and two years old instead of eleven. This an exaggeration of what Rachel is trying to say.
