It muffles out the prayers being said to comfort those injured and lying out on the battlefield. The next phrase expresses a great tragidity; no one can believe that so many are dying. The non-stop sound of the bugles from the countryside plays the military funeral song as more and more die. The candle that usually placed at funerals in churches is not present. You cannot shake the hand of the dead only try to close your eyes to picture them and say your good-byes. At the end of the poem is a drawing of the blinds. This is to tell others that there has been a loss and to put closer to a day that everybody wants to forget. This is a very sad poem. It puts many pictures in your mind about how bad this time was.
